Awesome Activities in Beautiful Melbourne

Written By: Oly

As the capital city of Victoria, Melbourne is one of those Australian cities that truly appeals to all visitors. Whether you like visiting urban cities to enjoy high-end dining, visiting a sports team, or browsing the various galleries and museums, Melbourne is a destination that is loved by all who visit. The city is connected internationally by a massive airport and is only a 30 minute drive to the city centre -- easy for those who want an extended holiday or looking for a simple weekend getaway.

One of the reasons why I love Melbourne is because I can both visit and have nothing planned or I can have a variety of attractions I want to see and both trips are equally as entertaining. I’ve created some of the top things that visitors to Melbourne can do on any budget and appeal to all visitors, whether you like to enjoy social or high-energy activities, or you prefer to blend into the local life and walk around Melbourne getting a feel for this Australian city.

Explore the City Centre

One of my favorite things to do in Melbourne is simply walk around all of the cobbled streets, which are full of boutiques, cafés and quiet little coffee shops. Many of the streets also feature public art and urban art, one of the most famous being Degraves Street, which you can even see a piece of graffiti art by the iconic artist, Banksy. If you like to go to new cities and people watch, be sure to stroll around the quaint little neighbourhoods and grab a cup of coffee as you watch people go about -- a super relaxing way to start any visit to Melbourne.

Attend a Sporting Event

Sports are very prevalent in Melbourne and at any point in time there is probably some type of sporting event going on. Between March and September, the Australian Football League holds events at the Melbourne cricket ground, but you can always catch international match over the rest of the year. Yesterday Grand Prix is also held in Melbourne at the Albert Park -- a must-see for racing fans! If you happen to be visiting Melbourne during the first week in November, will have the opportunity to catch the Melbourne cup, which is a prestigious thoroughbred horse racing events.

Check Out the Views

When you want to enjoy a refreshing cocktail and see the Melbourne skyline all at the same time, one of the best vantage points is any number of the rooftop bars located throughout the city. Some of the best neighbourhoods to enjoy a rooftop bar experience include Carlton and Fitzroy -- these two areas feature rooftop bars that give you awesome sunset views. There also rooftop bars to appeal to any ambience, whether you want a more bohemian vibe or an upscale experience.

Experience Melbourne’s Art Scene

Art and culture is very important to the city of Melbourne. One of the oldest galleries in Australia is the National Gallery of Victoria, which was founded in 1861. This gallery contains more than 7,000 pieces of art ranging from international and local artists. Another fun destination for those who appreciate art and culture is the Australian Centre of the Moving Image, which highlights television and film, both locally and abroad. Music is also found in many destinations throughout Melbourne -- theatres host events such as cabaret, comedy and even musicals. For those who like jazz or live music in general, the Bird’s Basement club is located in Melbourne’s city centre and always features a range of musicians.

Shopping Heaven

Visitors to Melbourne will find themselves in shopping heaven exploring the various neighborhoods throughout the city. Open-air markets are especially popular including the Queen Victoria markets, which is considered the Southern Hemisphere’s largest open air shopping attraction. You can easily hop on mass transit to explore nearby markets or travel to the South Melbourne Market, which features a variety of food and goods – no matter what you’re looking for, markets in Melbourne feature everything from vintage clothing to fresh produce.

World Class Dining

Melbourne offers a range of eateries for every budget and neighbourhood. One recommendation is to visit Attica, which is considered one of the world’s best restaurants. If you’re interested in dining at Attica, I highly recommend that you book your table as far in advance as possible, as it is often booked to capacity. During the month of April, Melbourne’s culinary scene is celebrated -- ranging from hidden restaurants to world-class dining, the city is a true destination for visitors everywhere!
