Top Travel Destinations in Italy

Italy is one of those countries that nearly everyone wants to visit and for good reason. The moment I stepped into the country I just knew that there was something majestic about it and everything I had ever read about Italy was completely true. While you can get a good idea of the country and its beauty by looking at pictures, nothing substitutes the actual experience of walking through the cities and looking at all of the ancient attractions and points of interest, which date back thousands of years. It’s impossible to walk through any neighbourhood or city in Italy without seeing so much culture and heritage in every building and street in the country.

Those travelling to Italy have so much to see and experience no matter where they go -- whether you want to focus your trip to staying in Rome, Florence or Venice, you will have a packed itinerary and likely still have so much more to see by the time you go home. Italy has a vast number of heritage sites located throughout the country, so no matter where you go, you will be close enough to visit many of them. While a good portion of my visits to Italy revolve around seeing the historic monuments and archaeological sites, the art alone in this country is just on another level. The landscape of Italy is also breathtaking, ranging from picturesque coastlines and mountain ranges -- sometimes there are just no words to describe how beautiful Italy is.

One downside to visiting Italy is that there are so many things to see or do that trying to narrow it down to fit a particular itinerary could be quite overwhelming. On a personal note, I’ve had to visit Italy many times and I still have so much to see, so my recommendation is to pick one region of the country and focus most of your attention and energy on it. However, if you want to see as much of Italy as you possibly can, here are some of the top travel destinations in Italy.

The Pantheon

Located in Rome, the Pantheon is one of the world’s most famous structures and a true sight to see -- when looking at some of these historic sites, it almost a surreal experience to know that they’ve been sitting there for thousands of years! The Pantheon is one of the most popular destinations in Italy and out of many of the historic sites, is considered to be one of the best maintained and preserved destinations.

Vatican City

Also located in Rome, the Vatican City is a popular destination for visitors of all faiths. Considered a sovereign country, Vatican City is home to countless museums, including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Aside from visiting the iconic Vatican City on its own, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica are top destinations in Italy -- visiting this area will give you opportunities see multiple top destinations in a single day.

Trevi Fountain

Chances are you’ve seen the Trevi Fountain, which is considered to be the most ornate and beautiful in the world. Its Baroque design is highly appealing and it dates back hundreds of years. When you visit the Trevi Fountain, you’ll see that there are other tourists throwing coins into the water, as it’s a legend that states if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain you will one day return to Rome. It’s hard to say if it’s true or not, but it’s better to throw a coin in than not!

Venice Canals

If you’re venturing down into Venice, the canals are a popular point of interest and quite central to the city itself. Throughout Venice, there are over 150 different canals, which create a picturesque ambience and appearance for the city. If you’re interested in seeing more of Venice, be sure to hop on one of the gondolas for that once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Colosseum

There are just so many top destinations in Italy that it’s hard to narrow them down to just a handful if you’re limited on time. Perhaps the most famous destination in the country is the Colosseum, which is also thousands of years old and still standing in some parts -- enough to give us an idea of just the sheer size of the venue and how it must’ve looked during the ancient Roman times.

No matter what you see or do in Italy, you’re going to have a magnificent experience full of art, culture and amazing food, so just enjoy yourself and go with an open mind!
