If you have decided to visit Australia and you discover that it is a vast country with many points of interest and you don’t know where to begin, don’t worry; I felt that way on my first trip to the country! Many visitors typically only think of Sydney as being a destination to visit in Australia, but as you’ll soon realize, Australia has many different regions and major cities along the coastlines that all offer something new and unique to local and international visitors.

After coming back from my most recent trip to Australia, I thought I would put together a list of some of the top point of interest in Australia, which have a variety of options in different regions. As with many other countries, travel itineraries can be broken up into two parts -- a list of points of interest you want to visit and then a second list of activities that you would like to try while you are on holiday. I’m going to combine these two and give you a range of options for activities that you can do near some of the famous points of interest. Australia is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever visited and there is a diverse range of locations that are sure to appeal to every visitor, whether you’re on a budget or looking for a more luxurious stay.

For many people, Australia is one giant country with a few cities located about, but actually there are many different regions all with their own major cities. Whether you want to visit Perth in Western Australia, head down to Victoria and enjoy a stay in Melbourne, head east to New South Wales to visit beautiful Sydney, or even head to Tasmania and spend a weekend in Hobart, Australia as a whole is diverse and fun with many casual and laid-back activities that make this country truly one of the best destinations on earth.

You could ask an Australian what their top points of interest are in the country and they might differ from an international traveller, but one of the top points of interest in Australia is of course Sydney simply because it is an iconic destination with famous landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House. Sydney also has many other attractions including Bondi Beach, which is a popular hotspot and beach area for residents and travellers -- if you visit Sydney during the summer months, chances are you’ll see that Bondi Beach is often completely packed. Other fun things to do are being in town for a festival or browsing many of the cultural attractions and museums. If you decide to visit Australia and stay in Sydney for the entire visit, you’ll have no shortage of things to do.

If you head south to Victoria from Sydney, you’ll definitely want to hire a car and take a drive on the Great Ocean Road. This top scenic drive is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and extends to 243 kilometres, which will take about a day to complete. Throughout the entire drive down the Great Ocean Road you’ll see stunning views of the ocean, travel through rain forests and even drive along breathtaking cliffs -- one of the most amazing ways to see the Australian landscape. Along the drive, you’ll have many opportunities to pull over and check out the pristine beaches or stop in a quaint little township for lunch or a rejuvenating snack.

Did you know that Australia has a rainforest? The Daintree Rainforest, which is located in Queensland and only 110 kilometres away from Cairns, is an amazing escape and perfect for those who like outdoor activities. There are many animal sanctuaries in this area, as well as tours that give you a detailed explanation of the area and history. If you really want to get adventurous and try something unique to Australia, you’ll want to check out the crocodile boat tour, which is exhilarating and full of fun.

Another top point of interest in Australia is the Great Barrier Reef, which can be accessed from Queensland. Aside from the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef is another one of the world’s most iconic destinations and is a beautiful place for visitors to set their eyes upon. For many, a visit to the Great Barrier Reef is on their bucket list and a visit to Australia is an amazing way to cross that off.

Australia is home to so many beautiful and unique features that you will need to travel back time and time again in order to fully appreciate the wonder and beauty of the country.
